A Skills-development Workshop: Introduction to Schema Therapy from a Social Work  Perspective

Schema Therapy has recently been recognised in Australian psychological circles for meeting the Continuing Professional Development criteria for Focussed Psychological Strategies. AMHSWs, in comparison to psychologists as psychotherapists, are slowly starting to see the benefit of becoming educated and certified in this well-researched, effective practice approach.  This one day workshop offered by the Australian Association of Social Workers, as part of the SA Branch CPD events, will address the following learning outcomes:

• Develop and understanding of the history of schema therapy and how the model works
• Understand how it can fit within a social work practice framework
• Practice some of the associated skills and techniques

Certification Workshop 3:  Interventions to Overcome Common Obstacles in Treating Personality Disorder

This 2-day Master Class with Joan Farrell. PhD, and Nicola Kenney, MSW is suitable for Schema Therapists at all levels and clinicians who have some knowledge and experience in using the basic schema therapy model, and want to learn more about core schema therapy interventions to work with the issues presented by clients with personality disorders (e.g. Borderline PD, Avoidant PD, Narcissistic PD) and features of these disorders. Day 1 will specifically focus on impasses with clients and day 2 on the impasses these clients present for therapists. Participants will learn ways to identify what the impasses are and help clients work though them. Interventions will include experiential work to connect and get through the resistance of dysfunctional coping styles, imagery rescripting and storytelling to introduce the Vulnerable Child Mode and mode role plays (aka schema mode chair work). For impasses with therapists, exercises will be used from Joan and Ida's latest book: Learning Schema Therapy from the Inside Out: A Self-practice/Self-reflection Workbook for Therapists (Guilford,expected in Fall 2017).  This training can be counted toward the required curriculum for ISST certification in Schema Therapy.

Joan is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, advanced certified Schema Therapist Supervisor-Trainer in Individual and Group and the ISST Executive Board representative for Training & Certification.  This is the 4th and possibly last visit to Australia in person for Joan and her partner, Ida Shaw. They anticipate that after this they will be offering webinars instead and continuing supervision from their comfortable home in Indianapolis with their 3 little Yorkies- Zoe, Ziggy and Zach.

Child and Adolescent Schema Therapy: Hand Puppets, Imagery, and Mode Dialogues

Ida Shaw, MA, is coming from the USA to run this four day workshop  on Child and Adolescent Schema Therapy (ST-CA) - an innovative and integrative therapy for children and adolescents that significantly expands on traditional approaches.  ST-CA involves intensive work with the child and their caregivers with the aims to:
  • distinguish the differences between maladaptive behaviours and age appropriate behaviours
  • identify and validate the emotional needs of the child and help meet their needs through strengthening attachments and building adaptive coping strategies;
  • reduce and heal early maladaptive schemas and coping strategies by a strategic integration of Cognitive, Behavioural and Experiential interventions
  • educate and support caregivers in the recognition of the effects of their own schemas and modes on the children and adolescents under their care
  • help the caregivers connect to their own happy child mode to improve connection with the child
  • develop communication skills
In this interactive workshop you will gain both a theoretical understanding of the ST model and practical skills in the application of Schema Therapy with children, adolescents, and their families. The workshop will teach participants to design developmentally appropriate approaches to implement experiential mode work with children and adolescents, including drawing, puppets, imagery, mode dialogues, imagery rescripting and story-telling.  The  approach of ST for  engaging caregivers and wider family and educational systems in treatment is also covered.

Ida has ISST approved Certification Training Programs in Individual, Group and Child-Adolescent Schema Therapy. This is the 4th and possibly last visit to Australia in person for Ida and her partner, Joan Farrell. They anticipate that after this they will be offering webinars instead and continuing supervision from their comfortable home in Indianapolis with their 3 little Yorkies- Zoe, Ziggy and Zach.
