Training and Certification Program

STAA's program has been developed so that interested individuals can select specific workshops to attend depending on their professional development needs and affordability requirements.  Training and supervision in Schema Therapy is also available to those therapists who would like to gain standard or advanced level certification in individual Schema Therapy through the International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST).

The benefits of obtaining standard or advanced certification through the ISST, include an international recognition of competence in practising Schema Therapy, potential opportunities to be involved in research and training, and inclusion in an international network of certified Schema Therapists.

Please note that places are limited in workshops and on the certification program to ensure quality is maintained and ISST principles, rules and guidelines are strictly adhered to.

Standard Certification

Therapists at this level are certified to practice Schema Therapy, participate in outcome studies and to train or supervise other therapists at a basic level only with the supervision of an advanced level trainer-supervisor within an approved training program. They are not qualified to run a training program, rate sessions, or offer supervision on difficult cases.

Standard Certification is available for experienced mental health professionals, who have post-graduate qualifications (or equivalent) in psychology, clinical social work, psychiatric nursing, medicine or a counselling field that leads to accreditation, licensing or registration.  Applicants will require advanced level experience in psychotherapy.

If you are accepted into the program, you will be required to have access to personality-disordered (preferably one with BPD) clients and others who are appropriate for Schema Mode work.

The program is approximately 12-18 months long and in its duration you will be expected to:
  • treat at least 2 clients with schema therapy for a minimum of 25 therapy hours each, totalling 80 sessions
  • attend 6 days of training, which will be divided over a series of workshops that include 25 didactic hours and 15 dyadic hours
  • have 20 sessions of supervision, approximately 50-60 minutes in length (in addition to face to face, they can be completed by telephone or a platform like Skype
  • be willing to engage in self therapy as part of supervision and peer supervision if available
  • submit at least 2 video or audio recordings of client therapy sessions that are each accompanied by a completed schema case conceptualisation form
  • achieve a session competency rating (STCRS) of 4.0 or greater on your final recording (we will arrange for an independent rater, other than your supervisor, to score your final session)
  • Cost TBA and will include all required training, supervision and ratings of recorded sessions.  Any travel that may be required is extra.
